About the Item

An impressive Victorian four-panel folding screen, handcrafted in England around 1880 and decorated on both sides with an extraordinary assemblage of decoupage. Each panel is meticulously covered with hundreds of carefully composed chromolithographs, Victorian scraps, die-cut paper ephemera and printed illustrations, creating a richly layered collage filled with historical figures, exotic animals, flowers, fruit, birds, butterflies and romantic scenes. The remarkable density of imagery invites continual discovery, revealing new details from every angle. Unlike most Victorian decoupage screens, this example is fully decorated on both the front and reverse, allowing it to be placed freely within a room where it can be appreciated as a sculptural decorative object as much as a functional room divider. The frame is crafted from finely ebonized wood with elegant pierced crest rails and retains its original brass hinges and hardware, reflecting the high level of craftsmanship characteristic of the late Victorian period. Presented in beautiful untouched condition with an attractive aged patina and gentle signs of use consistent with age. Measurements: Height: 186 cm (73.2 in.) Width: 224 cm (88.2 in.) Depth: 3 cm (1.2 in.) When folded together : H 186 W 60 D 13 cm England, circa 1880.
