About the Item

The sumak carpets of the Caucasus are among the very few weavings that retain a refined classical character in their designs, while simultaneously displaying a potent tribal aesthetic. The drawing of large diamonds flanked by octagonal devices seen here is based on a classical Anatolian 'large-pattern Holbein' carpet prototype, as it first appears on 15th and 16th century Turkish rugs depicted in the works of Hans Holbein the Younger. The design also incorporates many elements seen on the rugs and trappings of the tribes of the Caucasus, such as the stylised rosettes which embellish the spaces between the diamonds and the octagons. The very good condition of this sumak rug allows us to fully appreciate the magnificent quality of its deeply satutared, gem-like colours. The rare large square format makes this rug an ideal choice for a variety of decorative settings.
