About the Item

Turkoman rugs and carpets are woven in the region east of the Caspian Sea known as West Turkestan, that is populated by nomadic tribes. The design element that distinguishes this type of rug is the gul medallion, which is usually octagonal in shape, and includes smaller geometric elements inside. These medallions are used as field decorations often arranged in parallel or offset columns. Each tribe had their own distinctive tribal emblem or gul. The Ersari is a large tribe widely scattered geographically in this region that has dispersed into sub-tribes. The most important sub-tribe is the Beshir, whose designs have been largely influenced by textiles woven in Bokhara and utilize motifs that originated in both Persia and China. The Ersaris are also known for weaving large carpets in gallery formats employing the liberal usage of saffron coloration in their patterns. 19' 5" x 7' 10".
