Created circa 1940, this 9x14 hand-knotted wool rug is a definitive piece from the Style Arbus, pioneered by master décorateur André Arbus. It is a compelling work of discipline and sophistication, is an extremely collectible piece and a remarkable testament to one of the 20th century's most influential French designers. On the Design: Admirers of French decorative arts will immediately recognize the signature sensibility of André Arbus in this composition. The design embodies his core principle: "to be new while remaining traditional." This masterful structure achieves clarity through restraint. The field is a vast, contemplative expanse of smooth, tonal seafoam and powder blue wool, creating a tranquil surface Arbus often used to evoke calm and space in his interiors. The entire field is contained by a triple-banded border system, executed in sharp, creamy ivory lines against a deeper turquoise band. The key to the design's power lies in the prominent outer frame: a continuous, boldly rendered Greek Key (Meander) motif. Arbus frequently employed such classical geometric forms—often called the "Antique Motif"—to lend a sense of timeless intellectual rigor to his Art Décoratif. The contrast between the plush, monochromatic field and the hard, rhythmic angularity of the classical border is a sophisticated exercise in contrast, creating an aesthetic balance that is both supremely elegant and powerfully modern.
