About the Item

The Haas weaving company was founded in 1810, and was guided by founder's son Philipp since 1818. Initially they were manufacturers of clothing fabrics, transitioning into upholstery from 1831 and incorporating carpets since 1845. In 1851 he was joined by his two sons, Eduard and Robert, and the company was renamed Philipp Haas & Söhne. Their weaving workshops were located in the Austrian towns of Ebergassing and Mitterndorf. The carpets they produced were based on designs commissioned to the most representative artists of the period. Soon their carpets achieved an international reputation for excellence in quality, especially after they exhibited at the 1873 Vienna World Fair. Soon after they were awarded the prestigious title of Imperial and Royal Court Carpet and Upholstery Fabric Supplier, placing them at the pinnacle of the Austrian textile industry. The carpet presented here shows an infinite repeat pattern of a wreath motif, in a tone-on-tone colouration against a chartreuse green background. The style is quite characteristic of the early Viennese secessionist movement, in its quest for renewing classical iconography by introducing a chromatic juxtaposition which will distinguish the textile art of the Jugendstil movement.
