About the Item

A magnificent antique handmade rug from the Middle East, woven circa 1920s in the celebrated Sarouk tradition — one of the most refined and enduring expressions of classical carpet weaving. This is a piece of exceptional decorative presence: a deep, jewel-toned crimson field blanketed in an allover design of curvilinear floral sprays, palmette blossoms, and sinuous vine scrolls, rendered in a rich palette of midnight navy, ivory, soft rose, sage green, and warm amber. The composition breathes with the controlled abundance characteristic of the finest Sarouk weavings — every inch of the field alive with botanical detail, yet never crowded, always balanced. The central medallion is a masterwork of geometric floristry: an eight-pointed star medallion in ivory and navy, its lobes filled with smaller floral rosettes in rose and gold, radiating outward into the crimson field like a compass of blossoms. The surrounding field is populated with an extraordinary density of individual floral sprays — each one unique, each one a small jewel of the weaver's art — creating a garden-like abundance that rewards close inspection. The main border is a deep navy ground carrying a continuous procession of large palmette blossoms and curling arabesques in crimson, ivory, and rose, flanked by narrow guard borders of reciprocal vine and rosette. The border system is generous and well-proportioned, framing the field with authority without overwhelming it. Natural ivory fringe finishes both ends. The wool pile is dense, lustrous, and soft underfoot — the hallmark of quality Sarouk weaving — and retains excellent depth and sheen consistent with a well-preserved example of its age. The colors remain vivid and true, with the natural patina of a century of gentle aging adding warmth and depth rather than diminishing the palette. Condition is good overall, with honest wear appropriate to its age and entirely consistent with a piece of this period. A versatile and commanding rug that works equally well in traditional, eclectic, and contemporary interiors. At 199 × 131 cm (6'6" × 4'4"), it is an ideal size for a sitting room, study, bedroom, or hallway — substantial enough to anchor a space, refined enough to elevate it.
