About the Item

Pablo Picasso’s Sans titre (c. 1965) is a rare Aubusson wool tapis, conceived during the artist’s late and highly expressive period. The copyright of this work is reserved by Succession Picasso. The composition, dated 28.5.65 within the design, reflects Picasso’s return to bold figuration and the primacy of line, translated here into a powerful black-and-white French artistic rug. Created from an original design by Picasso and produced in a very limited edition of approximately ten examples, this work demonstrates the artist’s continued exploration of scale, surface, and the relationship between fine art and decorative form. Woven by the prestigious Atelier Marie Cuttoli in Aubusson, the tapis sits at the intersection of modern art and exceptional craftsmanship. Heavy black contours define abstracted, biomorphic forms against a light ground, giving the work a strong graphic presence and a raw, immediate energy characteristic of Picasso’s late drawings and prints. The restrained palette amplifies the intensity of the line, transforming gesture into texture and giving the composition a tactile physicality. Rare works of this scale and medium from Picasso’s late career appear infrequently on the market, making Sans titre a distinctive and highly collectible example of 20th-century modernism in woven form.
