About the Item

A vintage brutalist oak armchair by De Puydt, produced in Belgium during the 1960s–1970s. With its solid oak construction, sculptural high back, curved armrests and rustic architectural presence, this Belgian brutalist chair is a strong example of mid-century European craft furniture with a warm, grounded character. Maker: Kunstmeubelen De Puydt Origin: Belgium Period: 1960s–1970s Style: Brutalist, rustic modern, Belgian mid-century design Materials: Solid oak Dimensions: 57 W x 45 D x 104 H cm (22.4 W x 17.7 D x 40.9 H in) Seat height: 39 cm (15.4 in) The chair is defined by its tall split backrest with rounded paddle-like forms, exposed crossbars, broad plank seat and softly curved armrests. Its solid oak construction gives the piece a heavy, honest and tactile quality, while the visible grain, softened edges and natural wear create a beautiful aged surface. The silhouette feels almost architectural: upright, sculptural and expressive, with a distinctly Belgian brutalist rhythm. De Puydt, often referred to as Kunstmeubelen De Puydt, is associated with Belgian solid oak furniture from the mid-20th century, especially brutalist dining chairs, armchairs and rustic modern seating from the 1960s and 1970s. Condition Good vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with its period. The solid oak shows visible patina, surface wear, light scratches, small marks, colour variation and softened edges throughout. There is visible wear to the seat, armrests, legs and lower stretchers, as shown in the photos. The wood has a naturally aged, slightly dry surface in places, adding to its rustic character.
