About the Item

A rare and highly desirable early production LAX lounge chair designed by Charles Eames and Ray Eames for Herman Miller, produced circa 1954. This iconic example features an exceptionally beautiful translucent parchment fiberglass shell with rich organic fiber bloom throughout, revealing the depth and texture that define the finest early Eames fiberglass production. The sculptural low-profile form is mounted on the original zinc-finished LAX base with correct boot glides, one of the earliest and most sought-after configurations from the Eames fiberglass chair line. The softly patinated base complements the warm parchment coloration of the shell, while the translucency allows light to interact beautifully across the surface, emphasizing the chair’s layered fiberglass matrix and subtle tonal variation. Notably, this example formerly retained its original red Venice label, which has since detached over time, though the outline and impression of the label remain visible on the underside of the shell — a characteristic detail often seen on authentic early production examples from the Venice, California period. Originally conceived as part of Charles and Ray Eames’ revolutionary molded fiberglass seating program, the LAX lounge chair represents one of the most refined and architecturally balanced forms of the series. Its relaxed recline and sweeping silhouette embody the Eameses’ pioneering approach to combining industrial innovation with ergonomic comfort and sculptural elegance. An increasingly scarce collector example retaining excellent early characteristics including the original shock mounts, zinc base, boot glides, and desirable translucent parchment shell. A quintessential piece of American mid-century modern design and an important work in the history of postwar furniture production.
