About the Item

Philippe Starck (b. 1949) Clift Armchair, ca. 2001 Mahogany plywood and brown imitation leather Model created for the Clift Hotel in San Francisco, USA H. 71 x W. 51 x D. 46 cm H. 28 x W. 20 1/8 x D. 18 1/8 in. This beautiful armchair by Philippe Starck is a highly collectible piece of design as it was never put in production for commercial purpose but only designed and made for Hotel Clift in San Francisco. This makes it one of the rarest Starck piece on the market. Philippe Starck is one of the most influential French designers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Renowned for his prolific and multidisciplinary practice, he has consistently blurred the boundaries between design, architecture, and everyday objects. Emerging in the 1980s, Starck gained international recognition for his radical approach to interiors and furniture, combining conceptual rigor with wit and accessibility. From iconic seating to hotel interiors and industrial design, his work is driven by a democratic vision: to create intelligent, functional objects that improve daily life while remaining emotionally engaging. Balancing elegance with provocation, and innovation with practicality, Starck has shaped contemporary design through a language that is at once refined, ironic, and unmistakably modern.
