About the Item

This rare wingback chair was designed by Emilio Sala and Giorgio Mandini in the late 1950s. The model was produced by Fratelli Galimberti in Cantu, Italy. The chair features an expressive, sculptural silhouette characteristic of 1950s Italian design. Its dramatic high back rises in a gently flared winged form, giving the piece both presence and enveloping comfort. The curved, outward-bending armrests flow seamlessly into the chair’s upholstered body. The seat is generously padded with a subtly rounded profile, providing an inviting and well-balanced proportion. The piece stands on four tapered, splayed walnut legs, each finished with refined brass-capped tips. The chair has been newly upholstered in Niamey tweed fabric by Nobilis. With its subtle mix of yarns—ranging from matte to slightly lustrous, soft, and woolly—the textile revitalizes traditional woven tweed. The chair has been completely restored, including reupholstery and refinishing of the legs. It is in overall very good condition, with only a natural patina on the wood and brass. Other Italian Modern designers working in the same era include Gio Ponti, Ico Parisi, Guglielmo Ulrich, Melchiorre Bega and others
