About the Item

This charming French provincial child’s high chair, likely dating from the late 18th century, circa 1780–1800, is a remarkable example of vernacular country furniture. Handcrafted from solid elm, it embodies the honest craftsmanship and timeless simplicity associated with rural French interiors of the period. Its robust hand-hewn construction, traditional pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery, and beautifully weathered surface all point to an early origin. The gently shaped ladder-back, naturally irregular uprights, and rich golden patina have developed over more than two centuries, giving the chair an authenticity and warmth that cannot be replicated. Every mark, shrinkage crack, and subtle repair tells part of its long history, while enhancing its decorative appeal rather than detracting from it. Originally fitted with a woven rush seat, the chair now features an old solid wooden seat replacement, a practical alteration carried out during its working life that reflects the resourcefulness of rural households. The protective arm rails and elevated seat preserve its original function, while its sculptural silhouette makes it equally attractive today as a decorative accent. Rarely encountered in such an untouched state, this high chair is a wonderful collector’s piece, offering exceptional character for a farmhouse, country house, mountain chalet, or any interior celebrating authentic antique furniture. Whether displayed alone or alongside a collection of early French provincial pieces, it possesses an undeniable presence born from centuries of careful use and preservation.
