Large Handwoven Rattan Peacock Chair, Southeast Asia, 1960s–1970s, Height 165 cm Monumental handwoven rattan Peacock chair, also known as an Emmanuelle chair, produced in Southeast Asia, most likely the Philippines or Indonesia, circa 1960s–1970s. This large-scale chair is entirely handcrafted from natural rattan and reed and represents a high-quality and refined example of traditional weaving craftsmanship. The tall fan-shaped back rises to an impressive height and is composed of multiple concentric layers, each executed in a distinct weaving technique. This layered construction creates a strong architectural depth and a sculptural presence that clearly distinguishes this piece from smaller or later decorative examples. The central back panel features a finely executed diamond-pattern weave, framed by intricately braided borders and softly curved outlines. The wide, rounded armrests flow seamlessly into the generous seat, which rests on an elevated circular pedestal base. The structure is well balanced and structurally sound, reflecting experienced atelier production rather than mass manufacture. The surface shows a beautiful natural patina with subtle color variations and minor signs of wear consistent with age, confirming the authenticity of the piece. The chair remains in very good vintage condition, with no structural issues. Peacock chairs of this size and complexity were produced in limited numbers for the international market and are increasingly difficult to find today.
