About the Item

Designed by Dutch designer Dick Spierenburg for Castelijn in the late 1970s, the Model SDC armchair stands out for its boldly architectural, raked frame. Flat black enameled steel members form the back uprights and rear legs, angled dramatically backward to create the chair's signature leaning posture. Round chrome steel elements form the front legs, sled base, and open armrests—the contrast between the two finishes giving the piece a strong graphic quality. Seat and back cushions are upholstered in Black leather, kept flat and rectilinear to reinforce the chair's rigorous, minimal geometry. Castelijn was among the most respected Dutch furniture manufacturers of the postwar decades, known for collaborating with serious designers and maintaining high production standards. The SDC model represents Spierenburg's interest in structural contrast and visual tension as primary design tools. Shown in original condition. Leather shows wear consistent with age and use, including softening and light creasing. Frame remains solid and structurally sound.
