About the Item

A Rare and Elegant Pair of French Modern Neoclassical Style Curile form armchairs or club chairs in the style of Armand Albert Rateau. These exquisite lounge chairs are in solid bronze with the seats and backs formed by linked bronze fishes and the arms formed by linked bronze sea shells. These chairs are similar to the pieces designed by Armand Albert Rateau (French, 1882-1938) for George Blumenthal, President of the Metropolitan Museum in the 1930s. Rateau was one the great creators of the French Art Deco period. His works are singular in their design and exquisite in their materials and hand workmanship. He had no equal in his work and it is religiously collected today. Additional References: French Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern. Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Paul Poiret, Ballet Russe, Coco Chanel, Jean-Michel Frank, Paul Dupre-Lafon.
