About the Item

A fantastic pair of early edition Clam Chairs, designed in 1944 in Copenhagen by Arnold Madsen for the collaborative work with cabinet maker Henry Schubell, who together formed one of the most iconic duos in Danish Modern design. While for many years, the chair’s design was mistakenly attributed to Philip Arctander, recent research has conclusively revealed Madsen as the true visionary behind this remarkable piece. Initially coined the "Musling stolen" (meaning "Mussel Shell"), the Clam Chair marked the beginning of a long and fruitful partnership between Madsen and Schubell. Their dedication to pushing the boundaries of craftsmanship and innovation is evident in this chair’s unique form, which blends sculptural beauty with exceptional comfort. This particular set is an early example from the 1940s, easily identified by its smaller frame and lower backrest, hallmarks of the original design. Over the decades, the Clam Chair has been produced in various iterations, but these early versions remain highly sought after for their authentic charm and minimalist proportions. These chairs have been lovingly reupholstered in a thick, curly shearling upholstery, offering both enhanced comfort and a rich tactile experience. The cream hue of the shearling beautifully complements the warm wooden legs and armrests, creating a balanced aesthetic that will effortlessly elevate any interior. Perfect for adding a touch of coziness and warmth, this iconic pair brings timeless elegance to any space.
