About the Item

A striking and exceptionally comfortable pair of Italian armchairs produced by ISA Bergamo in the 1950s, attributed to Gio Ponti. The design embodies the bold and distinctly Milanese language of the period, where sculptural form meets architectural discipline. The side profile is particularly powerful: the armrests flare forward in a confident, wing-like gesture, creating a dynamic diagonal tension. The backrest rises with elegant restraint and subtly curves inward at the top, giving the chairs an embracing yet slender vertical presence. The composition of volumes is carefully balanced — a floating seat cushion rests above a softly rounded lower base, enhancing both visual depth and comfort. From every angle, the silhouette reveals intentional design thinking typical of Milan in the 1950s, where even the lateral view becomes a defining aesthetic statement. The armchairs stand on tapered walnut legs, warm in tone and beautifully proportioned. The wood adds lightness and refinement, counterbalancing the generous upholstered forms above. They have been fully restored and newly reupholstered in a luxurious smoke-gray velvet-blend fabric by Rubelli, the renowned Italian textile house celebrated for its sophisticated velvets and nuanced chromatic depth. The fabric’s soft, atmospheric tone and subtle sheen respond elegantly to light, enhancing the sculptural quality of the chairs while maintaining a timeless and refined character. Beyond their aesthetic presence, these armchairs are exceptionally comfortable, with renewed internal padding and webbing to ensure proper support and longevity. The restoration has been executed with great care and respect for the original structure. Photos documenting the interior and restoration process are available upon request. An elegant and architecturally expressive pair that reflects the refined domestic culture of mid-century Milan — where proportion, craftsmanship, and comfort converge.
