Unique Piece. This rare pair of armchairs belongs to the FerroTipi series, designed in 1968 by Italian architect Gianantonio Malacrida, in collaboration with architect Paolo Resmini, within the experimental climate of late-1960s Italian design. Conceived as part of a broader research into modular metal furniture, the FerroTipi project explored the expressive and structural potential of bent tubular steel, reducing the object to a sequence of essential gestures. In these armchairs, the steel profile forms a continuous loop that simultaneously generates legs, armrests, and structural support, embodying a synthesis of architectural thinking and industrial technique. The suspended seat and backrest system-originally made of woven natural fiber and later adaptable to upholstered configurations, as documented-reflects the designers' intention to create an open typology rather than a fixed model. Material variation was integral to the concept, allowing the same structural matrix to accommodate different tactile and ergonomic interpretations. Design historian Anty Pansera, who documented the FerroTipi series, emphasized its industrial aesthetics, expressive rigor, minimal gestures, and essential line. These qualities situate the armchairs within the most advanced currents of Italian experimental design of the period, at the threshold between mid-century modernism and the radical investigations that would define the 1970s. Never industrially produced and preserved within Malacrida's personal archive, these armchairs are exceptionally rare. They stand today as significant collectible works, exemplifying a collaborative architectural approach to furniture design and representing a refined synthesis of structure, form, and material honesty. Being prototypes, they were never put into production. One-of-a-kind pieces. Provenance: From the private archive of architect Gianantonio Malacrida (1939- ). Original work by the author, preserved in his personal studio collection.
