About the Item

A sculptural and solidly constructed Indian bench dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The back is composed of vertical spindles capped with carved finials and joined by horizontal rails accented with brass roundels. The seat is wide and generous, framed by substantial arm blocks and supported by heavy turned front legs. Iron bracing beneath the seat reinforces both structure and visual weight. The construction feels assembled rather than purely ornamental — honest joinery, visible hardware, and surface wear that speaks to long use. The spindle back likely originated from a practical utilitarian structure before being incorporated into this bench form; while stories suggest rural transport origins, that remains anecdotal rather than documented. What remains certain is its presence. It is wide enough to anchor an entry hall, strong enough for daily use, and architectural enough to sit comfortably beneath contemporary art. The scale works beautifully in townhouse foyers, loft spaces, or layered traditional interiors. Dimensions: Overall: 39.75"H x 49"W x 26"D Seat: 37"W x 19.5"D Seat Height: 19.25"H Condition: Good overall antique condition. Solidly constructed. Wear to finish with visible stains, nicks, and scuffs. Surface shows accumulated dust and debris in crevices consistent with age and use. Structurally sound.
