About the Item

A molded fiberglass bench by German industrial designer Walter Pabst, produced by Wilkhahn in the 1960s. Pabst studied under Wilhelm Wagenfeld at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin and brought that rigorous Bauhaus-adjacent sensibility to his furniture work. The Model 1000 reflects it: the seat and base are formed from a single shell of fiberglass reinforced plastic, a material Pabst was among the first European designers to work with seriously at the furniture scale. The form cantilevers slightly at each end, giving the bench a visual lightness that belies the density of the material. The underside retains the raw fiberglass texture typical of the period, contrasting with the smooth finished surface of the seat. Original color and finish intact. Wilkhahn production label present.
