George III Oak Open-Arm Panel-Back Settle, England, Circa 1780–1800 A handsome George III oak settle of classic English country-house form, featuring a finely paneled back with six fielded panels framed by molded stiles and rails. The shaped open arms terminate in elegant handholds above a generous seat, all raised on square rear supports and slender front legs united by stretchers. Constructed in solid oak and displaying a rich, mellow patina developed over centuries of use, the settle embodies the practical elegance of late Georgian furniture. Originally intended as a protective seating form in halls, kitchens, and principal rooms, it now serves equally well as a statement piece in an entry hall, library, mudroom, or at the foot of a bed.
