About the Item

MR10 chairs, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and produced by Thonet in Germany in the 1960s. The structure is made of chromed tubular steel, bent with exceptional technical precision to create a continuous, fluid, and elegant line. The frame follows the cantilever chair principle: the absence of rear legs produces a striking visual lightness, with the body’s weight supported solely by the front legs and the elastic flex of the steel. This solution, revolutionary for its time, conveys a sense of dynamic balance and absolute modernity. The seat and backrest are crafted in rattan, a warm, organic material that contrasts beautifully with the coolness of the chromed metal. The dense, regular weave is not merely decorative but also functional, ensuring comfort, breathability, and remarkable durability over time. The slightly inclined backrest and generous seat contribute to a relaxed and ergonomic sitting posture. The contrast between polished steel and natural fiber is one of the defining elements of the design: a perfect synthesis of industry and craftsmanship, radical modernism and material sensitivity. The result is an essential chair, free of superfluous ornamentation, yet extremely refined in its proportions and construction details. The MR10 model was first presented in 1927 at the renowned “Die Wohnung” exhibition in Stuttgart, causing great amazement for two main reasons: the innovative use of chromed tubular steel and the chair’s extraordinary visual and structural lightness. At the time, the idea that a chair could stand without the traditional four legs seemed almost futuristic. Today, these chairs are regarded as true masterpieces of 20th-century modern design. They are not merely functional objects, but genuine icons of international design, perfectly suited to both modern interiors and more classical settings, where they immediately become focal points of the space. Dimensions: H 75 cm x W 48 cm x D 81 cm; seat height 44 cm. Original labels. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969), a German-born American architect, was one of the leading figures of the Modern Movement. Renowned for his approach based on the purity of form and the principle of “less is more,” Mies applied the same architectural ideals to furniture design: geometric rigor, structural clarity, and timeless elegance.
