About the Item

Pierre Jeanneret was a pivotal figure in twentieth-century modernist design, best known for his extensive work in Chandigarh. As a close collaborator and cousin of Le Corbusier, Jeanneret contributed not only to the city’s architectural master plan but also to the design of its interiors and furnishings. He believed that furniture should complement architecture, creating cohesive environments rooted in function, material honesty, and structural clarity. The Big Box Chair is one of Jeanneret’s most recognizable and iconic furniture designs. Originally created for administrative buildings in Chandigarh, the chair features a bold, rectilinear wooden frame—often crafted from solid teak—with generous, boxy armrests that give it its name. Many examples include woven cane panels on the seat and backrest, adding textural contrast and ventilation suited to the local climate. The chair’s wide proportions and low stance convey both comfort and authority.
