About the Item

Set of 4 English Armchairs and Chairs in the Sheraton Style, Late 19th Century The Sheraton style is directly associated with the English cabinetmaker Thomas Sheraton. This style, popularized by Sheraton, marked a departure from opulence and large-scale designs. Its peak of development occurred in England during the 2nd half of the 18th century. Furniture designed by Sheraton can be succinctly described using the word "simplicity." The subtlety of the decorations and the compact construction exudes elegance. The legs of the furniture became more slender and were sometimes fluted. The materials used in crafting Sheraton furniture included exotic mahogany, often accented with light inlays or rosewood. Additionally, highly weather-resistant satinwood was frequently employed. Surfaces were finished using various decorative techniques such as inlays, reliefs, or veneering.
