About the Item

This very rare daybed, designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by the esteemed cabinetmaker Christensen & Larsen in Denmark during the 1950s, is a quintessential expression of Danish mid-century modern design. It exemplifies the harmony between function and form, material richness, and the quiet elegance that defined the work of both Kofod-Larsen and his collaborators. Crafted from solid teak, the frame is defined by its linear clarity and sculptural refinement. The wood, now matured into a deep, warm tone, showcases a fine grain and a well-developed patina that underscores its age and authenticity. The frame features elegantly tapered legs and gently chamfered edges, revealing the precision joinery and subtle detailing for which both Kofod-Larsen and Christensen & Larsen were known. The proportions are generous yet balanced, allowing the daybed to function equally well as a primary seating element or a lounging platform. The upholstery has been carefully renewed using Gabriel’s Savak plain wool fabric, originally designed by Tove Kindt-Larsen. This textile is known for its tight weave, tactile quality, and understated sophistication. In a soft, neutral tone, it complements the richness of the teak frame and introduces a contemporary freshness while maintaining historical integrity. The seat cushion is cleanly tailored and generously proportioned, ensuring comfort without disrupting the daybed’s visual restraint. One of the most distinctive features of this piece is its discreetly integrated pull-out tray, located just beneath the frame. Designed to slide effortlessly in and out, the tray offers functional storage or a temporary surface for placing items—an element of quiet innovation that speaks to Kofod-Larsen’s thoughtful approach to utility and versatility. The design’s edges are gently angled and softened, lending the piece a subtle sculptural character that shifts depending on the viewer’s perspective. While the overall silhouette remains rectilinear and minimalist, these nuanced curves elevate the design and reflect the organic sensibility that permeates Kofod-Larsen’s work. With dimensions of 198.5 cm in width, 92.5 cm in depth, and 36.5 cm in height (approximately 78.1 x 36.4 x 14.4 inches), the daybed is proportioned for both comfort and architectural presence. Its low profile and elongated form make it suitable for use in a living room, entryway, or even as a multifunctional object in a studio or guest room. Ib Kofod-Larsen was among the most respected designers of his generation, admired for his ability to bring warmth and sensuality to modernist furniture without sacrificing clarity of line or function. His work is marked by a deep understanding of wood and a commitment to graceful, human-centered design. Collaborations with high-caliber cabinetmakers such as Christensen & Larsen allowed his designs to be executed to the highest standard, combining artisanal craft with modern ideals. This example remains in excellent vintage condition, with minor signs of use consistent with age. The wood is stable and rich in tone, and the upholstery is newly applied and immaculate. The integrated tray functions smoothly and aligns seamlessly with the frame when retracted.
