About the Item

Set of 6 Toscanella dining chairs designed by Sergio Camilli for Poltronova in 1963. Rosewood frame, leather. Sergio Camilli, an Italian designer, founded the furniture company Poltronova in 1957. Later, in the 1970s, he decided to pursue a career as an independent designer. An example of Camilli's work is the Toscanella chair collection, which includes a range of furnishings such as stools and tables, as well as the snail-shaped floor lamp made of transparent fiberglass, created in 1974 for Bieffeplast. In the 1960s, in a region like Tuscany that produced nothing in terms of design, Poltronova had all the best designers on its team: not only Ettore Sottsass, who was its art director, but also Gae Aulenti, Paolo Portoghesi, Giovanni Michelucci, Angelo Mangiarotti, Archizoom, Superstudio, and De Pas–D’Urbino–Lomazzi; thus, not only the masters, but also the leading figures of “New Design,” who at the time called themselves radicals… Compared to Dino Gavina or the Danish elite, who in the early 1960s created the first niche of very high-quality brands, Sergio Cammilli immediately adopted a different, experimental approach, bringing together the polycentric spirit of Italian design—its contradictions and its opposing tendencies; in the certainty—which today has proven to be accurate—that it was precisely in this complexity that the reason for the unity and vitality of this extraordinary phenomenon lay. In the same catalog, Cammilli immediately brought together the anarchist objects of Archizoom and the first Italian “equipped wall” (the Cub8) by Angelo Mangiarotti, along with Paolo Portoghesi’s postmodern experiments and Ettore Sottsass’s satirical archetypes.
