About the Item

A well made set of six Cotswold School oak dining chairs with original leather drop in seats. One chair stamped: F H Burland. Circa late 1920s. Made in English oak with exposed dovetail construction to the top rails, traditional pegged joints, and chamfered edges throughout. The structural detailing and proportions align with early Gordon Russell workshop practice. Each chair individually stamped 1–6. All chairs are uniform in colour, with the oak in good, clean condition. There are some water marks and knocks, mainly to the front rails and the stretchers. One front leg shows an old repair near the stretcher. This was previously glued and remains stable and secure. The repair has been colour matched and is very discreet. Please refer to the numbered photographs. The chairs are structurally sound with no loose joints. The leather seats are a mid tan colour and comfortable. All show expected wear to the leather, including dent marks and use related impressions, as photographed. As drop‑in seats, they could be easily re‑covered if required.

Glasgow School Oak Armchair George Walton Style 'Abingwood' Liberty & Co

By George Walton

Located in Norwich, England

A superb Glasgow School Arts And Crafts oak armchair. After a design by George Walton for Liberty & Co. Circa 1895. The chair is almost identical to the George Walton design, but has a variant shaped top to the back. Literature: Daryl Bennett, 'Liberty Furniture 1875-1915'.4 Art Furniture, Page 131, plate 4.91. Sketch illustration of George Walton design. Please see photographs. The seating retains the original webbing and filling and has been padded and re-covered with brown leather and copperised studs. The studs are set how they were originally on the chair. Please refer to the last photograph showing the frame before re-upholstery. They have been slightly aged. The oak has the original patina, which has been waxed. There are some marks around the frame with an indentation to note to the top of one arm. The edges to the legs are knocked with use. The chair has a flattened curved arm with an elongated tapering back. The Abingwood design was considered some of the most distinctive of Walton's designs, strongly influenced by C R Mackintosh...
