About the Item

Marcel Breuer Cesca Dining Room Chairs - Chrome, Wood, and Leather, Italy 1970s These chairs feature a cantilevered design, a signature style of Marcel Breuer, which gives them a floating appearance without traditional legs. Named after Breuer's daughter Francesca, the Cesca chair combines modernist aesthetics and functionality. Made from tubular chrome-plated steel, they offer durability and a sleek, polished look. The chairs are upholstered in salmon-colored leather, ensuring breathability, comfort, and a natural texture. Natural wooden accents around the seat and back add structure and contrast. Please note that the chairs show signs of use but remain in good vintage condition, with the wood displaying a lovely patina. We have 12 chairs available, priced individually. Marcel Breuer was a significant figure in 20th-century modernism and a member of the Bauhaus faculty. Alongside fellow architects and artists like Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, he left Europe in the 1930s to promote modern design in the United States. Born in Hungary, Breuer became a Bauhaus student in 1920, quickly impressing Gropius with his furniture design skills. Influenced by the Dutch design movement, De Stijl developed his signature innovation in 1925: lightweight tubular steel frames for furniture, a technique widely adopted by his contemporaries. In the 1940s, Breuer opened his architectural office, transitioning from geometric structures to hybrid designs with local fieldstone bases and modernist upper floors. His most famous architectural work is the brutalist Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, completed in 1966. Breuer's notable furniture includes the Wassily chair, which is recognized for its leather strap seating, and the caned Cesca chair. He also designed molded plywood pieces for the British firm Isokon and created a student furniture suite for Bryn Mawr College. Breuer's designs are elegant and functional, embodying the essence of modernist style.
