About the Item

A rare set of six “Leonardo” prototype dining chairs designed by Gabriele Centazzo for the Italian design company Valcucine in 2012. The chairs were developed as part of an experimental furniture line conceived by Centazzo. Due to the extraordinary complexity of their construction, however, the design proved impractical for large-scale production and never entered commercial manufacturing. Fewer than twenty examples are believed to have been produced, making surviving sets exceptionally rare. KalaRara Roma acquired this group of six chairs directly in the year of their production. They have remained carefully stored since and have never been used. The “Leonardo” chair is constructed from more than one hundred precisely cut maple elements assembled entirely with wooden dowels, without the use of screws or metal hardware. Despite the apparent delicacy of the structure, the design is remarkably strong and stable. Centazzo conceived the chair as a structural homage to the visionary engineering studies found in the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci. The open skeletal framework recalls the experimental machines and structural drawings that appear throughout da Vinci’s codices, reflecting Centazzo’s long-standing interest in the concept of dematerialization — the pursuit of strength and function through lightness and intelligent engineering. The chairs remain unvarnished, allowing the natural beauty of the maple wood to remain fully visible. Depending on the intended interior, the surfaces may be left in their natural state or finished with a clear varnish or painted finish. Elegant, architectural, and conceptually distinctive, the chairs function beautifully around a contemporary dining table while also working as sculptural seating in gallery environments, architectural interiors, or design-focused hospitality spaces. Condition: Never used. The chairs remain in excellent condition and have been carefully stored since their production in 2012. Dimensions: Height: 92 cm Width: 44 cm Depth: 50 cm Seat Height: 48 cm
