This English adjustable gout stool dates to the 19th century and represents a specialized form of medical and domestic furniture produced for the management of gout and other inflammatory joint conditions. Designed for use in private interiors—most commonly libraries, studies, or dressing rooms—such stools were intended to elevate and support the legs while allowing the sitter to recline at a controlled angle. The stool features a robust hardwood frame fitted with an adjustable raked mechanism, allowing the seat to be set at multiple positions.
