About the Item

Attributed to Karel Boonzaaijer and Pierre Mazairac for Young International, this Dutch Postmodern lounge chair dates to 1983 and draws clear influence from Ettore Sottsass. The black-stained oak frame has a striking structural arrangement: two cylindrical front legs support the seat while the rear of the frame rests directly on the floor, eliminating rear legs entirely. A tall back panel flares slightly at the top, giving the silhouette an architectural, wing-like quality. Generously padded cushions in maroon leather cover the seat and back, with a black canvas sling providing underlying support. Detachable armrests in matching maroon leather add comfort and reinforce the bold Color blocking between the ebonized wood and deep maroon upholstery. Boonzaaijer and Mazairac were among the more adventurous Dutch furniture designers of the late 1970s and 1980s, producing work for manufacturers including Young International that engaged directly with the Postmodern and Memphis-adjacent movements gaining momentum across Europe at the time. This chair reflects the period's appetite for dramatic silhouettes, saturated Color, and deliberate structural experimentation over conventional seating convention. The chair shows wear consistent with age and use.
