About the Item

Created for Chicago and Orlando's Disney Quest in 1995, the "Armillry Chair" is a stunning contribution to the world of the design. Crafted from the genius of Jordan Mozer, this solid aluminum chair looks like it jumped off the screen from a Ridley Scott film. Rarely do we see such a thoughtful blend of modern design and sinister sci-fi inspiration. The anthropomorphic spine-like back support, replete with vertebrae, has a generous curve that makes a bold statement about the spirit of the chair. Set of 5 chairs. Burgundy vinyl piping frames out the tan ochre mohair back cushions and also match the seats. We're not certain if the seat vinyl is the original, but we know that seats were in fact burgundy while in use for Disney. Born in 1995 for the Disney Quest entertainment venues, these “Armillary Chairs” by Jordan Mozer fuse sculptural drama with industrial craftsmanship. The frame is solid cast aluminum-magnesium alloy, originally carved in maple as a prototype then reproduced in the recycled metal, polished and welded into form. The backs feature a spine-like armillary motif, a futuristic silhouette. Upholstery includes mohair back cushions in tan-ochre with bold burgundy vinyl piping that alphabetically frames them—they may be either original or restored in a style faithful to the original Disney Quest presentation. These chairs were salvaged from Chicago’s Disney Quest, giving them cultural as well as aesthetic provenance. They are rare designs: examples appear in design fairs and online auctions, but seldom in pairs, with frames this well preserved and upholstery maintained or sympathetically refreshed. Condition: Very minor imperfections in the vinyl seats—faint marks visible only under close inspection. Newer mohair fabric on back supports is in excellent condition. Aluminum has been cleaned and polished. Frames are solid

1970s Mid-Century Modern High Back Parsons Chairs in Chrome & Velvet

1970s Mid-Century Modern High Back Parsons Chairs in Chrome & Velvet

By Milo Baughman, Design Institute America, John Stuart Inc.

Located in Chattanooga, TN

A set of high-back Parsons chairs from the 1970s by Design Institute of America, these pieces deftly combine sleek chrome architecture with the warm comfort of tufted brown chevron-velour upholstery. The frame is flat-bar chrome, polished by hand to recover its original brilliance; legs and supports are thick, bold, and squared, lending the chairs a graphic architectural structure. The upholstery is plush brown chevron velour, originally tufted, deep in pile and texture, evoking both luxury and vintage warmth. The fabric has been professionally steam-cleaned, retaining much of its original character though showing minimal, age-appropriate wear that affirms authentic vintage pedigree. Condition is excellent. Chrome surfaces are bright with only subtle flaws visible under close inspection. Upholstery is sound: seams are tight, backs straight, cushions supportive. Minor signs of use—slight darkening or softening in high-contact areas. These chairs are versatile. They excel around dining tables, in ensembles of side chairs, or as statement pieces flanking consoles or desks. Their chrome frames reflect light, brightening spaces; their tufted backs and velvet bring texture, comfort, pattern. They pair especially well with wood tones, mirrored or glass surfaces, warm leathers, and neutral palettes seeking warmth and vintage glamour. For collectors of chrome modernism, vintage Parsons styles, or pieces by DIA (Design Institute of America), this set offers rarity, integrity, and presence. These are chairs deliver more than seating, atmosphere, design lineage, and the kind of visual trajectory that holds up in both modern and traditional interiors. What's more 70's legit than tufted brown chevron velour? These aluminum leg parsons dining chairs check all the boxes and are back in vogue with a vengeance. Perched on chrome flat-bar bases...
