About the Item

Sold and priced individually. Handcrafted in Paris by Maison Regain around 1970, these oak lounge chairs strike a rare balance between monumental presence and intimate comfort. Their block‑like frames celebrate the honesty of load‑bearing joinery—massive through‑tenons held fast with inset oak keys—calling to mind the sculptural rigor of Pierre Chapo’s celebrated S45 series. Yet where Chapo often favored walnut, Regain’s generous use of warm European oak lends these chairs a sunlit glow that softens even the boldest angles. Each chair’s low, wide seat and gently reclined back retain the original wool-blend fabric, perfectly crisp against the frame’s clean lines. The visible peg‑and‑key details along the arms and side rails underscore the pair’s atelier‑crafted pedigree, while the broad, flat armrests invite you to curl in with a book—or simply rest an elbow in repose. Whether flanking a bespoke blackened‑steel coffee table or anchoring a mid-century sofa grouping, these Maison Regain chairs deliver the same mix of architectural clarity and tactile warmth that made Chapo’s work so coveted—yet with their own distinctly Parisian flourish. Maison Regain emerged in the late‑1970s Provençal design scene as a quiet workshop devoted to solid French elm and exacting, hand‑cut joinery. Produced in small, highly controlled batches, each table, sideboard, and low‑slung chair bears the subtle hallmarks of its maker—dovetail seams finished with beeswax, surfaces burnished to a honeyed glow by decades of southern light. Active through the late 1980s, Maison Regain collaborated with designers Alain Ladroit, Luigi Gorgoni, and Roland Haeusler, and was commissioned by Charlotte Perriand for the Les Arcs ski resort. Because the atelier’s output never chased mass distribution, surviving examples remain scarce—most passing directly from original owners to a new generation of connoisseurs. That rarity, paired with the pieces’ architectural honesty and enduring materials, is now drawing the attention of top‑tier collectors and interior designers who recognize future classics before the wider market does. The Maison’s enduring qualities are what design historians now cite when positioning Maison Regain alongside the period’s most collectible masters. Today, Maison Regain stands as a touchstone of French craftsmanship: functional forms distilled to their elemental beauty, enriched by regional provenance, and destined for enduring cultural and investment value. Condition: Very good vintage condition overall. The solid oak frames are structurally sound with minimal surface wear. Both chairs retain their original wool-blend upholstery, which remains in great shape aside from a faint stain on one seat cushion—subtle and not readily visible. Each chair features faint decorative stitching on the backrest; one chair’s stitching appears slightly softer and less defined than the other. Both backrests include a built-in board for added support. Additional Dimensions: 18.75"AH
