Relaxing configuration by Studio Yoon Seok-hyeon. 2019 Dimensions: L 185 x W 260 x H 30 cm Materials: Upholstery fabrics 35 kg It is available to customize various sizes, colors, and fabrics and to proceed with commissioned works. There are many ways of relaxing on the sofa. We often lie down on the sofa, sit on it with legs under a blanket watching TV or sit on the floor eating food and leaning against it. Like this, the sofa is often used in more various ways than the original design intention. “Our individual lifestyle and cultural backgrounds affect how we relax on this object.” says Seokhyeon Yoon. He interviewed diverse people to explore the essentials of how they relax on their sofa in practice. What he discovered is that they’re using it not only for a typical sitting purpose but also for various relaxed positions especially lying down. He wanted to reinvent a sofa that is not set up at a specific height with a wooden structure. This new design should allow various positions to be comfortable. Designs are inspired by how carpet is made, he removed the wooden frame and he turned to knotting and buttoning cushions to allow people to recreate and adjust their own sofa at their own spots for relaxation. It is about finding our comfortable, most relaxing configuration. Users can create their own relaxing configuration by various methods such as buttoning and folding the given basic structure. Seok-hyeon Yoon I enjoy revaluing materials and objects which are always around us. Surroundings of everyday life often become a starting point for my design projects. I observe and analyze them and then try to link them to design, environment, society, and industry. My interest in projects is the materiality and socio-cultural value of design objects. With this interest, each of my projects reflects undiscovered stories of human life. As a designer, I interpret them with my own perspective and create objects to support and enhance our everyday life. My design process follows concept arrangement based on exploring a subject, in-depth research for materiality and contexts, hands-on practice such as drawing and model making and production.
