About the Item

Dutch Mid-Century office armchair, Model 356, designed by Christoffel Hoffmann for Gispen. Rounded, fully upholstered seat and back in black fabric are set within a continuous bent tubular metal frame that doubles as the armrest structure, capped with flat dark arm pads. The four-star swivel base in polished aluminum supports a central height-adjustment column, a practical detail consistent with Gispen's postwar institutional line. Gispen, founded in Rotterdam in 1916, became one of the Netherlands' foremost producers of metal furniture, embracing industrial methods and Bauhaus-influenced rationalism throughout the postwar decades. Christoffel Hoffmann's Model 356 sits squarely within that tradition, prioritizing functional ergonomics and durable construction for the office environment. The rounded upholstered shell softens the industrial metal framework, a balance characteristic of Dutch Mid-Century workplace design. Shows wear consistent with age and use.
