About the Item

An antique Eastlake settee of asymmetrical form, scaled for two and set on casters. A single upholstered arm at one side is set against a low gallery of turned spindles and ball turnings at the other, with incised geometric carving across the crest rail, arm support, and leg blocks. The frame is a straight-grained hardwood; the species is unconfirmed. The frame has been refinished, its surface stripped and renewed in a darker grey-brown tone, with wear and variation carried through. The seat and back were reupholstered in a Black Edition decorative weave velvet, pattern Tiano, in the Gunmetal colorway, a geometric design in charcoal, slate, bronze, and softened metallics, rated to 40,000 Martindale rubs. Internal seat materials were retained; the seat keeps a depression from long use. No maker's mark was located, so the piece is unattributed. The form was produced in both Britain and the United States; with no mark and a multi-country form, manufacture origin is not established. The date, circa 1885-1900, rests on the style and construction.
