About the Item

A three-legged corner chair in the Dutch cottage tradition, built around a triangular rush seat woven in a tight, even pattern. The inverted triangle backrest features a carved crest rail with foliate and scroll detailing, flanked by circular volute terminals. Bobbin-turned spindles fan downward from a central finial to meet the seat corners, with matching bobbin-turned arms, legs, and multiple rows of turned stretchers throughout. The bobbin chair form has deep roots in Dutch and Flemish folk furniture, with regional variations produced across the Netherlands from the 17th century onward. The hoekstoel — or corner chair — was a practical domestic form adapted to fit snugly against walls or into room corners. Bobbin turning, executed on a foot-powered lathe, was a defining technique of cottage furniture makers working outside major urban centers. The chair shows wear consistent with age and use including some chipping. The rush has been professionally repaired in a couple of areas to restore the seat's integrity.
