About the Item

A compelling pair of flat bar chrome cantilever armchairs in the manner of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's iconic Brno chair — one of the most architecturally significant and enduringly collected chair designs of the 20th century. Originally conceived by Mies in 1929 for the Tugendhat House in Brno, Czechoslovakia, the flat bar Brno chair has been continuously produced in licensed and unlicensed versions since its introduction, and this pair represents quality production in that tradition from the 1970s to 1980s. The frame is constructed from flat-bar polished chrome steel — the defining material choice of the Brno flat bar variant, as distinguished from the tubular chrome version also designed by Mies. The cantilever base sweeps forward from the rear uprights in a single continuous arc before returning to the flat rectangular floor plane — a structural and sculptural gesture that gives the chair its characteristic visual tension and physical spring. The chrome is polished mirror bright and presents with the attractive warm patina of several decades of careful use. The back pad and seat cushion are upholstered in the original blue cross-pattern fabric — a tone-on-tone woven textile in deep navy that has the graphic character and material density of quality contract upholstery from the period. The back pad floats on the rear chrome uprights, and the seat sits within the frame supported by the curved front arc — similar to the canonical Mies design. Both chairs are structurally sound and well-matched.
