Pair of William Spratling 1940s Sabino Wood and Woven Leather Armchairs, Taxco Mexico
An exceptional and highly collectible pair of mid-century armchairs designed by the legendary American-born designer and silversmith, William Spratling. Handcrafted in his renowned workshop in Taxco, Mexico during the 1940s, these chairs beautifully bridge rustic Spanish Colonial traditions with a refined, modernist sensibility.
Constructed from solid, character-rich Mexican sabino wood (Mexican cypress), the armchairs feature low-slung, sturdy frames defined by handsome turned legs, H-stretchers, and wide, flat-topped armrests. The seats and backs are woven from thick, rich cognac leather straps, which are meticulously secured to the frame with a striking border of large, hand-hammered decorative brass studs.
Both pieces bear the authentic, deeply branded "WS Taxco" monogram cipher on the reverse wood frame (as pictured), serving as a hallmark of their early, authentic Taxco provenance. Brimming with warmth and a beautifully earned historic patina, this rare pair of armchairs offers a powerful, sculptural presence that effortlessly elevates both contemporary and eclectic interiors.
