About the Item

Elegant pair of Chinese Ming-style hardwood scholar chairs dating to the Late Qing / Early Republic period. Featuring shaped crest rails, paneled splat backs, and finely carved open fretwork aprons, the chairs embody the restrained architectural simplicity associated with classical Chinese furniture design. Beautifully aged hardwood with warm patina throughout, showing natural wear consistent with age and use. The underside construction and hand-finished details reflect traditional joinery methods and craftsmanship. The clean sculptural lines of classical Ming furniture later inspired many Scandinavian modern designers, including Hans Wegner, whose iconic Wishbone Chair reflects the same emphasis on balance, restraint, and craftsmanship seen in traditional Chinese seating. Their elegant proportions and quiet presence work effortlessly within both traditional and contemporary interiors, equally compelling as occasional seating, pull-up chairs, or layered collected pieces. China, late 19th to early 20th century. Dimensions: 30” H x 16” D Seat height approximately 16.5”–17"
