About the Item

On offer is a handsome Barnard & Simonds Co. upholstered side chair with a curved "scoop" or "gondole" back flowing with a flourish down to sword-like “sabre” legs. The piece features black tufted leather upholstery trimmed with brass tacks and a painted Greek Key motif on the apron in a blend of the Neoclassical Empire and English Regency styles. The Neoclassical Empire style (c. 1799–1830) in furniture design emerged during Napoleon Bonaparte's reign, serving as a political and artistic statement intended to link his leadership of the French state to the grandeur of Imperial Rome and ancient Egypt. Barnard & Simonds Co. was a New York-based furniture company founded in Rochester in 1898. They relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1959, after this chair was made, and were eventually purchased by Baker Furniture in 1967.
