About the Item

Manufactured by Mondileder in the 1970s, this large three-seat sofa features a frame built from thick, dark-lacquered Manou bamboo, bent and stacked into horizontal rails that form the base and structural surround. Hand-woven rattan bindings secure the joints throughout the frame, a construction detail characteristic of Dutch natural-material furniture production of the period. The upholstery is patchwork brown leather, cut and sewn in vertical panels across the seat, back, and integrated bolster armrests. The low, wide silhouette and deeply padded cushioning reflect the relaxed seating proportions popular in Dutch design of the decade. The sofa draws design influence from Gerard van den Berg, the Dutch designer known for his exploration of organic forms and natural materials during the 1970s. Mondileder was a Dutch manufacturer active during this period, producing furniture in leather and natural materials. The Manou bamboo used in this frame refers to a specific large-diameter bamboo variety, chosen for its capacity to be bent and shaped into structural furniture components.
