Jules Wabbes “800” Sofa for Mobilier Universel, 1965 Designed by Jules Wabbes for Mobilier Universel in 1965, the “800” sofa is a striking example of postwar Belgian modernist design. Its presence is rigorous, architectural, and highly graphic: a dark-stained wooden frame defines the seating volume with clean linear precision, while the cognac leather cushions bring warmth, texture, and a beautifully lived-in character. The design reflects Wabbes’ distinctive approach to furniture: essential proportions, noble materials, and a rational construction where every element remains visible and purposeful. The exposed frame, square-section legs, framed side panels, independent cushions, and perimeter stitching give the sofa a strong structural identity, close to the refined language of institutional and contract furniture of the 1960s.
