About the Item

Extraordinary "Paganini" sofa designed by Luciano Frigerio and produced by Frigerio di Desio in the early 1980s. This model represents one of the most iconic and recognizable expressions of Frigerio's production, where design merges with a sophisticated and strongly identity-driven material research. The project stands out for its rigorous and monumental architecture, where the structure is not merely a support but a true dominant aesthetic element. The base is made of wood with an extraordinary geometric inlay work, characterized by a composition of different wood essences that create a refined and dynamic visual rhythm. The chromatic variations, ranging from warm and dark tones to lighter and reddish accents, generate a highly impactful graphic effect, typical of Frigerio's most refined production. The lines are sharp, almost architectural, with full armrests and important volumes that frame the upholstered seat. The leather cushions, soft and generous, introduce a perfect contrast between structure and comfort, adding a welcoming dimension to an otherwise extremely rigorous design. The leather is practically new, featuring a warm and natural patina, with slight creases, marks, and variations that testify to its authenticity and use, further enhancing the vintage character of the piece. The condition is very good, with signs consistent with age that do not compromise either the structure or usability, but rather enrich its charm. The sofa has the particularity that, depending on personal preference, it can be used with or without leather armrests, thus revealing the lateral wood inlay details. This sofa perfectly embodies Luciano Frigerio's vision: a cultured, material-driven, and timeless design, capable of dialoguing between art, architecture, and furniture. An important piece, rare on the market, ideal for collectors and for high-end interiors where it can become the absolute protagonist. Sold with certificate of authenticity. Luciano Frigerio, born in Desio in 1928, revolutionized the world of design and furniture production, inheriting the family tradition of high-level cabinetmaking. After graduating in accounting, he developed a passion for furniture design and musical composition. In the 1960s, taking advantage of the entrepreneurial opportunities of the Brianza area, he transformed the family company into an international reality, collaborating with important figures such as Gio Ponti and Franco Albini. Frigerio fulfilled his dream of creating furniture as unique pieces, introducing "solid wood sculpture furniture" and "bronze cast sculpture beds," combining artisanal excellence and precious materials. His company produced numbered and signed pieces, collaborating with renowned architects and designers. In the 1970s and 1990s, he opened ten showrooms in Italy. Recognized with various honorary titles, his works are exhibited in art galleries and have received prestigious awards. The permanent exhibitions in Milan testify to his ongoing influence in contemporary design, celebrating functionality, aesthetics, and artisanal mastery.

Mario Bellini Radical Italian Cotton Fabric Le Stelle Sofa for B&B Italia 1970

Mario Bellini Radical Italian Cotton Fabric Le Stelle Sofa for B&B Italia 1970

By Mario Bellini, B&B Italia

Located in Conversano, IT

Designed by Mario Bellini and produced by B&B Italia in the late 1970s, Le Stelle is one of the most emblematic creations of Italian design from that decade, an expression of the formal and technological research that defined the celebrated partnership between Bellini and the Novedrate-based company. The sofa stands out for its fluid and enveloping silhouette, built on a supporting structure in iron and steel that holds a cold-moulded polyurethane foam and Dacron® fibre padding—cutting-edge materials developed by B&B Italia in collaboration with its internal research centre during the golden age of Italian industrial design. Its profile, both soft and architectural, opens in a visual embrace: the inclined armrests unfold outward like wings, while the curved backrest and generous cushions define a deep, informal comfort. The name Le Stelle evokes a cosmic dimension, typical of Bellini’s poetic and experimental language, who at the time conceived the sofa as a microcosm of form, function and material. The upholstery is the original period fabric, an elasticised textile with diagonal stripes in shades of pink and salmon—a rare and refined chromatic combination that has preserved its authenticity. The original B&B Italia label, still present beneath the seat, certifies its provenance and the patented materials (Lycra®, Polysoft®, Dacron®), offering direct testimony to the company’s technological philosophy. Beyond its aesthetic value, Le Stelle represents a historical document of Italian radical design, where comfort and experimentation coexist in perfect balance. This example, preserved in its original integrity, is a true collector’s piece for enthusiasts and connoisseurs of 20th-century design, as well as a sculptural and poetic presence in any contemporary interior. It shows minimal signs of age, such as a few lateral marks, documented in the photographs and removable with a specific treatment, but is generally in excellent vintage condition.
