About the Item

French Brutalist Stool, Carved Elm Burl, Organic Edge, 1960s. This stool is carved from a solid block of burl wood with a swirling, figured grain that runs across the seat and down the legs. The seat retains a natural organic edge, its irregular contour left intact to follow the form of the raw timber. Four thick tapered legs give the stool a stable, sculptural stance and an architectural silhouette. The warm patina and hand-carved surface bring out the dense burl figuring, and the piece works equally as a low stool, a plant or vase stand, or a small sculptural side table. The carved elm burl construction reads as a studio-era or brutalist workshop object, shaped from a single mass of wood. Good vintage condition. Minor surface marks and wear consistent with age and use.
