About the Item

Pair of blue glazed stoneware stools or tables by Jean Ponsart. Artist monogram at the base. 2025. Approximatives dimensions : 17.5 x 11.8 x 11.8 inches. - Born in 1992 in Briançon, France, lives and works in Sahune, France. Clay entered Jean Ponsart’s life at an early age, first at the municipal fine arts school in Briançon, then in the studio of potter Malie Vignon, where he discovered a space of freedom and expression beyond the academic framework. After completing a CAP in Aubagne and a DMA in Antibes, he refined his skills alongside figures such as Bernard Dejonghe and Anne Verdier at the Maison de la Céramique in Dieulefit. These years of training and research shaped his relationship to the material and led him toward large-scale sculpture, which he now pursues in his own studio. His pieces take shape from large hand-built coils, following a method inspired by African practices. He works with a dense, grogged clay from Bollène, whose natural roughness he exploits to achieve raw textures. The long, meditative shaping process extends into the slip application, a true performance in which fire, hand, and music enter into dialogue. Gas firings at 1280°C reveal fractured surfaces reminiscent of rock, sometimes enhanced with glaze to deepen their intensity. His work draws inspiration from the mountains of his childhood, from stone and its slow erosion. Through these mineral forms, he seeks to convey the quiet strength and timelessness of landscape while affirming the trace of the human gesture. His sculptures, conceived to withstand time and weather, reenact the cycle of stone: soft matter becoming rock, offered once again to the action of the elements — a dialogue between nature, fire, and hand, between permanence and transformation.
