About the Item

This striking carved oak coffer is a fine example of Spanish Renaissance furniture, dating to the late 16th or early 17th century, circa 1600. Its bold, architectural presence and deeply incised geometric carving are strongly characteristic of Spanish production of the period, particularly from regions such as Castile or Aragón, where robust craftsmanship and symbolic ornamentation prevailed. The façade is centered on two powerfully carved rosette panels composed of concentric geometric motifs, a decorative language frequently encountered in Spanish Renaissance woodwork. These are framed by zigzag and chevron borders, while the central stile is articulated with a carved twisted rope motif, another element commonly associated with Iberian decorative traditions of the time. The sides are also carved, underscoring the quality and integrity of the original workmanship. Constructed from solid oak, the coffer stands on turned bun feet and retains its original hand-forged iron lock plate and hinges. The interior reveals traditional period construction and a generous storage compartment, bearing a rich patina developed over centuries of use. Traces of historic woodworm activity are visible, now inactive, and entirely consistent with furniture of this age. A rare and authoritative Renaissance coffer, this piece embodies the austere elegance and sculptural strength of Spanish furniture around 1600, making it an exceptional statement object for refined interiors and serious collectors.
