About the Item

Georgian butler's secretary bookcase hand-made in the United Kingdom in the late 1700s using mahogany and decorated with mahogany veneer and brass trim. The secretary features a top bookcase section with glass doors and two shelves, the internal part of the bookcase was painted a light blue, which works very well with the colors of the bleached mahogany. The bottom section features a flip top secretary pull out desk, over three inset drawers. From the outside the pull out portion of the desk is decorated with faux drawer front and a thin brass inlay with inlaid brass stars at each corner. All four drawer fronts are all decorated with horizontal mahogany veneer and a hand-carved ridged motif around the edges, giving nice depth to the, otherwise, very flat front. The piece has very straight lines and additional movement is provided by the hand-carved crown molding and the striation of the grain of the mahogany, which are more prominent due to the bleaching of the wood. Inside the secretary, the piece features several smaller drawers and storage areas. Overall this is a beautiful and elegant piece that can be used on a daily basis, its height requires a rather spacious room, but its light color make it look much less imposing than it really is.
