Details A pair of Mid Century Italian Libreria Display Consoles Hardwood with French polished finish Custom made in Rome, circa 1955 Height 198 cm (78 in) Width 96.5 cm (38 in) Depth 70 cm (27.5 in) Provenance Private collection, Rome, Italy A pair of custom made Italian Mid-Century libreria display consoles, commissioned in Rome circa 1955. Crafted in French polished mahogany, the pieces combine architectural shelving, sculptural cut-outs and sharply tapered legs, reflecting the confidence and refinement of 1950s Italian modernism. Part bookcase, part display étagère, they embody the expressive yet disciplined approach that defined post-war Italian design. Conceived for a private Roman commission, the consoles are defined by bold angular frames and carefully balanced proportions. The French polished finish lends depth and warmth to the timber, highlighting the precision of the joinery and the clarity of each intersecting line. Open shelving creates rhythm within the composition, allowing the pieces to function fluidly as display shelving, bookcases, étagères, consoles or desks. While conceived as a pair, each possesses a distinct presence and can be used independently within a space. The composition reflects a moment in Italian design where geometry, craftsmanship and utility were explored with remarkable restraint. Architectural yet sculptural, the forms balance visual lightness with structural confidence. Originally commissioned for a private Roman residence, the consoles remained together within a private collection for decades, preserving the integrity of the original pair.
