About the Item

This is a stunning example of a late Victorian or Edwardian sideboard-etagere or parlor cabinet. It is a highly architectural piece that blends several design movements, notably the Aesthetic Movement and Art Nouveau. The piece uses multiple beveled mirrors to create depth and to reflect light. The asymmetrical, fluid lines of the curved shapes of the glass panels in the upper side cabinets are a hallmark of the Art Nouveau influence. It is made of a rich, dark-stained wood, most likely a heavy mahogany or rosewood, which were favored for their ability to take fine carvings. The upper tier has two small flanking glazed cabinets for displaying delicate porcelain or crystal, surrounding a central open mirror shelf. Middle Tier: A central cupboard with two doors featuring heavy, deep-relief floral or foliate carvings. Lower Tier: An open display area with an arched "kneehole" design, flanked by open shelves supported by slender, turned spindles. Base: It sits on ball-and-claw feet or stylized cabriole legs, which adds a touch of traditional Chippendale-style elegance to the more modern (for the time) upper section. Unique Details The "spindle-and-lattice" work visible under the top shelves and near the base gives it a slightly orientalist or "Anglo-Japanese" feel, which was very popular during the Aesthetic Movement when homeowners wanted their furniture to look like "art." This piece was designed to be the focal point of a formal dining or sitting room—a true conversation starter for displaying a curated collection of treasures. The etagere is 74" high, 51" wide and 13" deep. The beveled mirrors on the upper cabinets have some silver loss relevant to the item's age. All doors open and close without any problem. This piece is heavy, solid, and extremely rare. We will ship this item via uship courier. Please contact us with your zip code for your individual shipping quote.
